The Plant Based Lifestyle Lab (P-LAB) has officially launched a new Plant-Based Food Certification System in Japan, aimed at increasing consumer awareness and supporting easier product selection in the growing plant-based sector. The initiative was formally announced at a press conference in Tokyo on March 25, 2025, with the certification program having officially started on March 1.

As interest in health and sustainability continues to rise, the market for plant-based products is expected to expand both in Japan and globally. However, consumers still face challenges in identifying which products truly align with plant-based values. P-LAB’s new system aims to address this gap.

Key Features of the Certification System

  • Flexible Definition: P-LAB defines plant-based food as a tool for pursuing a plant-forward diet. It does not require the complete elimination of animal-derived ingredients, distinguishing it from stricter vegan standards.

  • Clear Evaluation Standards: The certification sets specific criteria regarding ingredient sourcing and production processes to promote clarity and consistency in the market.

  • Third-Party Evaluation: An independent certification office has been established within P-LAB to conduct evaluations through a third-party review process, ensuring neutrality and trust.

  • Optional Certification Logo: Certified businesses are eligible to use the official P-LAB logo on their products or promotional materials. While usage is not mandatory, it provides a visible marker of trust and transparency for consumers.

Currently, the certification is available exclusively to P-LAB member companies, with plans to expand access to non-members in 2025. As of the announcement date, six companies and 17 products have already received certification.

Executive Insights and Market Impact

At the press conference, Kousuke Tanaka, Representative Director of P-LAB and Executive Officer of the Pasona Group, stated:

“This certification helps make plant-based options easier to understand for consumers and more credible for companies. It’s a tool that allows brands to confidently communicate their commitment to socially meaningful choices.”

Yasuo Murata, Chair of P-LAB’s Technical and Standards Committee and a representative from Oisix ra daichi, outlined the structure and requirements of the new system in detail.

Global Promotion: Toward Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025

Looking ahead, P-LAB plans to showcase Japan’s plant-based innovation on the global stage by participating in the Pasona Group’s pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, under the theme “PASONA NATUREVERSE”. This international event will serve as a strategic platform to present Japanese plant-based foods to a global audience.
