Cake.jp, an online sweets retailer based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has released its forecast for 2024 Christmas cake trends. With both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day falling on weekdays this year, the company expects that more people will spend the holiday with just their families, making “single-serving size” a key trend. Due to rising prices, budget-friendly “family-saving” cakes are also anticipated to be popular. Cake.jp conducted an online survey in September with 301 participants ranging from their 10s to 70s to predict Christmas cake trends.
This year, Christmas Eve falls on Tuesday, December 24, and Christmas Day on Wednesday, December 25. With both being weekdays, only about 23% of respondents said they plan to host a Christmas party with people outside their families.
Among those planning parties with family, friends, or partners, the most common group size was “two people” (around 25%), an increase of 6.5 percentage points from the previous year.
Cake.jp predicts that 3-4 inch whole cakes, as well as assortments or cupcake types that can be easily shared by two people, will be popular.
With an increasing trend toward frugality, the budget for cakes is also expected to be lower. The company noted that simple, tasty shortcake types and Korean-style cakes with minimalist designs are likely to be popular.
Another keyword this year is “no decoration tolerance.” This term, used mainly among young people, means “simple yet eye-catching,” and Korean-style cakes with a strong presence, despite their minimal decoration, are expected to gain popularity.
