Ito-Yokado Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Tetsuya Yamamoto) has partnered with Kobe University (Headquarters: Nada-ku, Kobe; President: Masato Fujisawa) to fully implement an AI-powered energy-saving system, the “AI Smart Air Conditioning System,” in Ito-Yokado stores. This initiative is part of the Seven & i Group’s environmental declaration, “GREEN CHALLENGE 2050,” aiming to reduce CO2 emissions from group-wide store operations by 50% by fiscal year 2030 (compared to 2013 levels) and to achieve net-zero emissions by fiscal year 2050.
The “AI Smart Air Conditioning System” optimally manages air conditioning by analyzing and learning from data collected via cameras, thermometers, and other sensors installed within the stores, which track foot traffic, temperature, and CO2 concentration. This system allows for efficient air conditioning in response to customer footfall and changes in room temperature. For example, it cools or heats areas with higher customer concentration more efficiently, while reducing air conditioning operation during low-traffic periods, leading to a significant reduction in energy consumption.
Since January 2024, a pilot experiment of the “AI Smart Air Conditioning System” has been conducted at the Ito-Yokado Hachioji store, demonstrating approximately 40% energy savings related to air conditioning. Based on the results of this pilot, the system will be gradually rolled out to approximately 70 Ito-Yokado stores. The introduction of the system in around 70 stores is expected to contribute to approximately 4.2%* (equivalent to about 22,000 tons) of the CO2 emissions reductions needed from fiscal year 2024 onward to meet the Seven & i Group’s 2030 target set in the “GREEN CHALLENGE 2050” initiative.
Ito-Yokado will continue to work proactively on societal issues, such as climate change, through collaborations with stakeholders, including industry-academia partnerships, to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society while striving to be a “trusted and sincere company.
