This week 2th and 3rd April, it is announced that Aeon Hokkaido and Izumi have announced their acquisition of stores from the major supermarket chain Seiyu. These acquisitions are aimed at expanding their businesses and strengthening their competitive position in the market.
■Aeon Hokkaido’s Acquisition of Seiyu
Aeon Hokkaido announced on April 2, 2024, that it would acquire 9 Seiyu stores in Sapporo for 17 billion yen. This acquisition is scheduled to be completed by October 1, leading to Seiyu’s complete withdrawal from Hokkaido. Aeon Hokkaido plans to continue operating all 9 acquired stores, with plans to change the store names to “Aeon,” “MaxValu,” and others starting in October. Additionally, the company intends to continue employing the staff working at Seiyu.
■Izumi’s Acquisition of Seiyu
Izumi announced the acquisition of Seiyu’s supermarket business in the Kyushu region. Through this acquisition, Izumi will take over the operations of 69 Seiyu stores spread across 5 prefectures in Kyushu, 41 of which are located in Fukuoka, the largest city in Kyushu where Izumi had previously faced challenges in expanding. This move by Izumi is aimed at expanding its business in the Kyushu region and enhancing its competitive edge.
These acquisitions are intended to strengthen the competitiveness in Japan’s retail industry and improve service provision to the local communities. Furthermore, they are expected to enhance the presence of Aeon Hokkaido and Izumi in their respective regions, thereby offering better services to their customers.
